FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your Questions Answered

What funding is available for a complete net zero home in Scotland?

Scotland's net zero home funding covers every stage. Insulation can be funded free via ECO4 for households with EPC D-G ratings receiving qualifying benefits. The Home Energy Scotland heat pump grant provides up to £7,500 non-repayable (£9,000 rural) plus an equal interest-free loan. Solar panels and battery storage benefit from 0% VAT until March 2027. Octopus Intelligent Flux pays approximately 30p/kWh for exported solar electricity. Home EV chargers attract an OZEV grant of up to £350. Call 0141 230 0198 for a complete funding assessment.

How much is the HES heat pump grant for rural properties?

Rural properties off mains gas with a rural or island designation qualify for £9,000 non-repayable grant + £9,000 interest-free loan = £18,000 total support. Standard properties receive £7,500 + £7,500. Both require an MCS-certified and HES-registered installer. Apply via HES 0808 808 2282 or through Scottish Energy Efficiency on 0141 230 0198.

Does the 0% VAT on solar panels apply in Scotland?

Yes. The 0% VAT rate applies UK-wide until 31 March 2027 for solar panels and battery storage installed with solar. This saves approximately £700 on a typical 4kWp solar system. No application is needed — it's automatic when you use an MCS-certified installer. Standard VAT (20%) returns after this deadline.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee and how much can I earn?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for surplus solar electricity exported to the grid. Octopus Intelligent Flux currently pays approximately 30p/kWh for exports. With a GivEnergy 9.5kWh battery optimized for Flux arbitrage, annual earnings typically range from £300–£500/year. Register with your energy supplier after solar installation.

Is ECO4 insulation really free?

Yes, if you qualify. ECO4 provides free loft, cavity wall, and solid wall insulation for homes with EPC ratings D-G whose occupants receive qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Benefit, and others). ECO4 may also fund first-time central heating, solar panels, and heat pumps in some cases. The scheme runs until December 2026. Contact your energy supplier or an approved ECO4 installer to check eligibility.

What is the OZEV grant for EV chargers?

The OZEV grant provides up to £350 towards the cost of a home EV charger for eligible electric vehicle owners. The charger must be smart-enabled and installed by an OZEV-approved installer (Scottish Energy Efficiency is approved). Smart chargers integrate with Octopus overnight cheap rates to minimize charging costs.

Can Scottish businesses access net zero funding?

Yes. Business Energy Scotland (BES) offers interest-free loans up to £100,000 for Scottish SMEs, charities, sole traders, and social enterprises. Funding covers solar PV, energy efficiency upgrades, EV fleet charging, LED lighting, and more. This is separate from residential funding routes.

Why isn't the HES solar grant listed here?

The Home Energy Scotland solar PV grant stopped accepting applications in June 2024. It is no longer available. However, solar installations still benefit from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 and ongoing Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) earnings via suppliers like Octopus. We only list active funding to avoid confusion.

How does my home improvement contribute to Scotland's 2045 net zero target?

Scotland has a legally binding net zero target for 2045 — 5 years ahead of the UK. Approximately 20% of Scotland's emissions come from heating homes. Every heat pump installation, insulation upgrade, and solar panel contributes directly to reducing these emissions. The Scottish Government funds these improvements because they're essential to meeting the 2045 goal.

Do I need different installers for each technology?

No. Scottish Energy Efficiency installs all 5 technologies — insulation, heat pumps, solar, battery storage, and EV chargers. We're MCS-certified, HES-registered, RECC members, and OZEV-approved. One company, one survey, one complete net zero journey. Call 0141 230 0198 to discuss your full package.
